The Shevra Lomdei Mishnayod Synagogue is the only surviving synagogue in the city. Before the German occupation, 64 percent of the city's population was Jewish. The museum attached to the synagogue commemorates Jewish life in the city. During the Austro-Hungarian era, Jewish life was characterized by a clash between Orthodox and Modern Jews. With the German occupation, Jewish life in the city ended. The museum depicts the fate of the Auschwitz survivors during the Holocaust and the post-war period. An interesting chapter is the one that depicts the fate of Holocaust survivors, illustrating how they were forced to leave Poland. Some fled to Germany and Sweden. Some were interned in Cyprus by the British Mandate on their way to Palestine before being allowed to emigrate there after the founding of the State of Israel.
