"After the burning of Pirčiupiai, in 1944, the Germans rounded up all the inhabitants of the village of Tiltai for the second time: children, youth, and elderly people. They caught them on the roads and drove them for interrogation as partisan liaisons and food suppliers. Everyone knew about the tragedy of Pirčiupiai, because smoke could also be seen in the village of Tiltai, and at that time they thought that the fate of the village of Pirčiupiai would also befall Tiltai. However, after a long interrogation, all those who did not confess and managed to justify themselves were released. Then Juozas Kairys, a resident of Tiltai, decided to build a chapel pole to protect the village. Soon it stood in the ûlyčia. The words inscribed on it: "Jesus, save the people" were apparently heard. The village survived. When the village street was widened, the chapel pole was dug up and erected in Juozas Kairys' garden behind the fence. It still stands today." /// History of the village of Tiltai.
