Bapaume Post Military Cemetery was erected in early July 1916 by British troops, just as the Battle of the Somme was beginning. It contains 410 bodies (327 British, 64 Canadian, 18 Australian, and 1 South African), including 181 unknown.
This cemetery notably contains the bodies of men from the 34th Tyneside Division who attacked La Boisselle on the first day of the battle, and others from the 38th Welsh Division, who recaptured Usna Hill on August 23, 1918.
Near two hills, Tara Hill to the west and Usna Hill to the southwest, which gave it its first name, this cemetery was erected in early July 1916, just as the Battle of the Somme was beginning, and was used until January 1917 by the various units that fought in the area. It then contained 152 graves. Albert having fallen into the hands of the Germans during their offensive in Picardy in March 1918, further fighting took place in August of the same year, at the time of the Allied counter-offensive, leading to new burials.
