At the start of the Vereda do Pico Ruivo (PR 1.2), you begin on a well-marked mountain path that leads directly into the barren, rocky landscape of Madeira's highest peaks. After just a few meters, the first views open up into deep valleys and to the surrounding mountain ridges. It's the perfect spot to check your shoes, backpack, and camera before heading towards the summit with its panoramic views.

Hiking
Entrance to Pico Ruivo. The parking lot fills up quickly. However, parking along the road is not a problem. You also have to get there early; we reached the top around 9:00 a.m. and found a parking space nearby. Police also regulate traffic.
The entrance fee is €3 per person. After that, the hike was problem-free.
Some hiking trails are closed, however,
e.g., to Pico do Ariero and the Ecumeada Pass.
