The "Hill 80" national cemetery was built during the conflict and then redeveloped in 1923 with the consolidation of the cemeteries of Etinehem and Méricourt-sur-Somme.
This cemetery contains 1,004 graves, including 49 Commonwealth soldiers (19 British, 1 Canadian, and 29 Australians). The site was originally the cemetery of the temporary hospital where Georges Duhamel served in August 1916 during the Battle of the Somme: "Hill 80 is there! You'll see more wounded than hair on your head and more blood flowing than there is water in the canal. Everything that falls between Combles and Bouchavennes ends up here" (Georges Duhamel, Civilisation). At the bottom of this necropolis is the tomb of Father Thibaut, Catholic military chaplain of the 1st Infantry Regiment, who died on September 26, 1916.
