Redemption Rock is a historic granite ledge located in Princeton, Massachusetts, along the Midstate Trail. On May 2, 1676, during King Philip's War, it was the site where Mary Rowlandson, a Puritan minister's wife from Lancaster, was released after 11 weeks of captivity by Native American forces. Her freedom was negotiated by John Hoar of Concord, who paid a £20 ransom raised by Boston residents. Rowlandson later chronicled her ordeal in "The Sovereignty and Goodness of God," a seminal work in American captivity narratives. Today, Redemption Rock is managed by The Trustees of Reservations and features an inscription commemorating the event.
