In the wide valley of the Altmühl, northwest of Gunzenhausen, lies the Altmühlsee. Its special feature: it invites you to spend a holiday by the lake and, with the Vogelinsel, is one of the most important protected areas for migratory birds in Bavaria.

The Altmühlsee is a beautiful lake, ideal for swimming, sailing and surfing. In the summer season, the excursion boat "MS Altmühlsee" connects the leisure centers on its banks: the Gunzenhausen lake center, the Schlungenhof surfing center, the Muhr am See lake center and the Seezentrum Wald forest center.

At Muhr am See, the information center of the Federal Association for Bird Conservation is at home, offering bird and nature excursions. On the lagoon-like bird island, the nature trail and lookout tower make this very special bird sanctuary a real experience.

A wide circular route (12 kilometers) on the lakeshore opens up hikers to the lake in all its beauty. Tip: The cycling map "Around the Altmühlsee" presents bike paths to the villages Merkendorf, Ornbau, Wolframs-Eschenbach, Mitteleschenbach, Weidenbach and Arberg.
