The most beautiful view of the lake is enjoyed by passengers aboard the MS Altmühlsee. The passenger ship tours to the individual maritime centers and invites again and again to various events for adults and children. On the Altmühlsee daily boat tours take place in the high season. In the remaining time there is a shortened timetable.

In the wide valley of the Altmühl, northwest of Gunzenhausen, lies the Altmühlsee. Its special feature: it invites you to spend a holiday by the lake and, with the Vogelinsel, is one of the most important protected areas for migratory birds in Bavaria.

The Altmühlsee is a beautiful lake, ideal for swimming, sailing and surfing. In the summer season, the excursion boat "MS Altmühlsee" connects the leisure centers on its banks: the Gunzenhausen lake center, the Schlungenhof surfing center, the Muhr am See lake center and the Seezentrum Wald forest center.

The Altmühl flows around the Altmühlsee. In case of a flood, an introduction of Altmühlwasser takes place in the lake. The Altmühlsee serves as a buffer before the transfer to the Brombachsee. Because of the shallow valley, the lake is surrounded by an annular dam. The water level is thus up to 3 m above the surrounding terrain.
