Here on the road to Hatzbach (locally known as Butterweg), by the abandoned church, in the headwaters of a stream flowing towards Mengsberg, lay the village of Gerwigshain. The field name appears in 1555 as "Wüstung Gerwichshain" (a deserted village), in 1576 as "Gerbisheim", around 1614 as "Wüste Gerwigshain" (deserted village), and in 1708/10 as "Wüste Kirche" (deserted church). It's a wonderful place to take a break. A beautiful spot in the woods.

    Hiking

Usually, abandoned villages consist of a sign and nothing else. The abandoned village of Gerwigshain has church remains and a spring, which helps to stimulate the imagination. Like the Glockenborn, I imagine a swampy spring hole in the middle of the forest in which a church bell could be sunk.
