In 1859, he achieved the transfer of the seat of the Lavantine diocese (Šentandraž in Austrian Carinthia) to Maribor and united almost all Styrian Slovenes within its framework. He founded theology and theological school in Maribor (this was the first college in Maribor and the predecessor of today's Maribor University).
Pope John Paul II beatified Slomšek on 19 September 1999. He also set the anniversary of his death as 24 September. The process for canonization is still ongoing.
