The mill was first documented in 1686 as the "Schiff Mühle auf dem Muldestrohm" near Schwemsal.[1] Originally, the Schiffmühle belonged to the alum mine, today's Bad Düben district of Alaunwerk, and was therefore called Bergschiffmühle, a shortened form of Bergwerks-Schiffmühle.[2] Until 1905, it served as a grain mill on the Mulde with two German grinding gears and one pointed gear. In 1905, a new building was constructed to serve as a floating power plant with 110 volts direct current, with the grinding mills in the farmstead of miller Paul Griehl being driven by an electric line. A further reconstruction in 1922 and 1923 enabled a transmission drive to the newly built mill building on the banks of the Mulde. The Mulde flood on July 10, 1954[3] destroyed the transmission and the strike fence of the mill. After the mill was re-equipped with an electric drive in 1955, mill operations could resume. Heavy ice drift on the Mulde River in 1956 caused further damage, resulting in the discontinuation of mill operations on the Mulde River.[1] From 1964 to 1967, the mining mill was secured and rebuilt in the former moat of Düben Castle, and on October 6, 1967, it was commissioned as a technical monument.[1] On August 13, 2002,[3] the mining mill was completely submerged in water due to the flood of the century. In 2002 and 2003, it was rebuilt in the moat of Düben Castle, using the old gear components as they were built in 1905. Since the 10th German Mill Day in 2003, the large paddle wheel has been rotated by electric motor on special occasions.[2]

The Bergschiffmühle (Mine Ship Mill) now stands as a technical monument approximately 50 meters from the Mulde River at the foot of Düben Castle. Instead of hydropower, it is powered by an electric motor on special occasions. This also powers the paddle wheel.[2]
