The military cemetery now contains 187 graves and commemorations from the First World War, 53 of which are unidentified: 181 British, 5 Canadian, and 1 Australian.
Bazentin remained in German hands from late August 1914 until July 14, 1916, when the 3rd and 7th Divisions captured the village and held it against German counterattacks. The 21st Division took possession of Bazentin-le-Petit Wood. The village was lost in April 1918 during the major German advance but was finally recaptured on August 25 by the 38th (Welsh) Division.
