The Viermärker Eiche on the city limits of Herdecke and Dortmund is an outstanding example of the deep roots of local history in the region's nature and culture. There was originally an oak tree on this site that was estimated to be 600 years old before it fell in 1945 at the end of World War II. This historic oak tree served as a prominent border point for the districts of Großholthauser Mark, Bittermark, Endermark and the Reichsmark of the Reichshof Westhofen, an area with a rich history dating back to 775, when it was founded by Charlemagne.
