Trentino, officially the Autonomous Province of Trento (Italian: Provincia autonoma di Trento), is a province in northern Italy and the southern part of the Trentino-South Tyrol region. The province gained its autonomy in 1972 through the Second Statute of Autonomy, which disenfranchised the region and transferred its autonomy to the provinces of Trento and Bolzano-South Tyrol.

The largest city and seat of the autonomous provincial government is Trento, which is best known for the Council held in the 16th century. Since 1989, the Trentino Tourist Board has used a butterfly as its trademark, as Trentino resembles a butterfly in its outline.[2] This refers to a comparison made by Cesare Battisti, who described the shape of the region as that of a butterfly as early as the end of the 19th century.[3] The Adamello-Brenta Nature Park, the mountainous landscape rich in lakes, and, last but not least, the numerous ski resorts, including Madonna di Campiglio, helped the province experience a tourism boom from the 1970s onwards.
