The ruins are the remains of an important 13th-century cathedral.
Glarentza was founded in the mid-13th century by William II of Villehardouin and was the most important port and mint of the Frankish principality of Achaia.
The ruins belong to an unusually large church (approximately 43 x 15 meters), which likely belonged to the Franciscan order. Important assemblies of the Achaean nobility were held here in the 13th century.
