The beautiful chapel in Kemphausen was a real feast for the eyes on our bike tour around Lake Dümmer.

On our tour around the Dümmer, this beautifully carved chapel was a real eye-catcher.

The Kophanke Chapel in the Kemphausen district of Damme has been carefully restored to protect its structural integrity. Particular emphasis was placed on preserving the wood carvings.

The chapel is the nucleus of the Benedictines in Damme. In 1962, Maria Kophanke asked the monks at Münsterschwarzach Abbey to take over her business and promote missionary vocations. So, in 1966, the monks moved to Damme to establish a boys' boarding school for missionary vocations at the school center.

The order ran the farm until 1984.

Maria Kophanke had the chapel built in 1956 as an expression of her faith, to bless the farm, and as a place of prayer for the people of the OM. Brother Stephan Veith, the head of the Damme Priory of St. Benedict, is particularly pleased with its renovation.

Every year on Corpus Christi, people from the Kemphausen farming community gather in advance of the Corpus Christi procession to make the carpet for the station at the Kophanke Chapel. On the Saturday before the procession, flowers are laid out on a roughly nine-square-meter-sized plate sprinkled with sand.
