The common medlar (Mespilus germanica) is a traditional fruit tree that has become rather rare today.
The medlar grows as a slow-growing, broad-crowned large shrub or small tree, usually reaching a height of 3 to 6 meters.
The apple-shaped fruits are only edible after exposure to frost or prolonged storage, as this softens them and reduces their high tannin content.
