The history of the Methodist Church in Jamaica began in 1789 with the arrival of Dr. Thomas Coke in Port Royal. His journey was accompanied by drunken and violent Kingstonians who nearly murdered him.
Methodists have traditionally been heavily involved in education. The church currently supports 31 primary schools and four secondary schools. St. Andrew High School for Girls, Excelsior School, York Castle High School, and Morant Bay High School are Methodist. Finally, the church supports two vocation colleges.
