In the assassination attempt in Sarajevo on 28 June 1914, the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and his wife Sophie Chotek, Duchess of Hohenberg, were assassinated during their visit to Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip, a member of the Serbian nationalist movement Mlada Bosna (Young Bosnia).

Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife Sophie were shot dead in Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip, a member of the Black Hand gang, a group of Serbian nationalists, whose aim was to free Serbia of the rule of the Austro-Hungarian empire.
