The approximately nine-hectare pond is located on the edge of the Gräfensteinberger Forest in the Franconian Lake District, not far from the Fallhaus, at an elevation of 420 m above sea level. It is fed by the Haidgraben, which is called the Heidweihergraben from the pond's outlet. To the south lies the Altmühlüberleiter (Altmühl Overflow Channel), and to the east runs the European Main Watershed.
