The last Chinese Ming emperor hanged himself here on a Japanese pagoda tree when he realized that rebel troops were streaming into the outskirts of Beijing and his dynasty was doomed. This ended the 276-year reign of the Ming Dynasty, founded by Emperor Hongwu. The rebels were quickly expelled by the Manchus, marking the beginning of the Qing Dynasty.
