A solar eclipse occurs when the moon moves between the Earth and the sun, partially or completely blocking sunlight. There are three types:
• Total solar eclipse: The moon completely covers the sun. It becomes dark for a short time, like night.
• Partial solar eclipse: The moon only covers part of the sun.
• Annular solar eclipse: The moon is too far away to completely cover the sun, leaving a bright ring around it.
Solar eclipses are rarely visible in a specific location because the Earth, moon, and sun must be in a perfect line. Important: Never look at the sun without special protective eyewear!

In ancient Egyptian times, a solar eclipse was considered a divine sign. The Egyptians believed that the sun was the god Ra, crossing the sky in his solar barque. When the moon moved in front of the sun and an eclipse occurred, many thought that a powerful monster, often identified with the serpent Apophis, was trying to devour Ra.
The priests had a special task: They performed rituals and beat drums or made noise to drive away the monster and save the sun. When the eclipse ended after a while, people believed that their prayers had helped release Ra.
