To improve flood protection for residents along the Mulde River in Saxony-Anhalt, the Saxony-Anhalt State Office for Flood Protection and Water Management (LHW) is planning to construct a controllable flood polder near the state border with the Free State of Saxony. The polder is located in the right Mulde floodplain and covers an area of approximately 520 hectares. The goal is to limit flood peaks during extreme events in order to minimize the risk of flooding and damage, such as that which occurred in August 2002.
