Throughout Mallorca, you'll come across the remains of old charcoal kilns in the mountains—silent witnesses to a bygone era. Here, deep in the Tramuntana forests, charcoal burners once stacked wood into large piles and allowed them to slowly char in the absence of air. The resulting charcoal was a valuable commodity: it was used for heating, cooking, and metalworking. But the charcoal burners' lives were hard—they lived for weeks in isolation in simple huts next to their kilns. Today, the charcoal kilns are abandoned, but their traces still tell of an important chapter in Mallorcan economic history.
