Rocky Sea Pass, at an elevation of approximately 11,300 feet, is a significant feature along the Uinta Highline Trail. Depending on your direction of travel, it serves as either the first or last major pass on the trail. The eastern approach consists of a series of switchbacks, while the western side offers a more gradual climb. From the top, hikers are rewarded with expansive views of the Rock Creek and Duchesne River drainages, as well as a glimpse of the Mirror Lake Highway corridor, which is often the first or last sign of civilization on the journey. It's important to note that the eastern side of the pass can retain snow until mid-June, or even later in years with heavy snowfall. There are suitable camping spots and water sources on both sides of the pass, making it a convenient location for rest and resupply.
