The castle was first mentioned in 1466 as le fief et le court de Strihout but it is certainly 250 years older, when it belonged to a series of fortifications on the border between Brabant and Flanders.
In 1659 Steenhout was elevated to a barony. Henri Buelens was then allowed to adopt the name and coat of arms of the old family of Steenhault. The current castle has a core from 1654, namely the square tower of three floors and a square building flanking the tower, from 1610.
