It is a reconstruction of a watchtower from the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes with a palisade, rampart and ditch. The original foundations of the watchtower lie about 20 metres from the reconstruction, which was extensively restored in 2009/10. The watchtower was built and opened by the Sayn Beautification Association at the suggestion of the archaeologist Prof. Dr. Georg Loeschcke, who had carried out excavations in the area of the Limes near Sayn on behalf of the Imperial Limes Commission at the end of the 19th century.
