The church was built, at the behest of the owners of Valle Tagli, Giorgio and Carlotta Romiati, around 1940. It is called Santa Maria degli Angeli in honor of the basilica of Assisi, which Carlotta had been fascinated by during a trip. In fact, many of the church's interior artistic motifs are taken from the interior of the basilica.
