The Colosseum, which is also today the largest amphitheatre in the world, was designed by the Emperor Titus Flavius Vespasian, who chose the area between the Palatine, Esquiline and Caelian hills, previously occupied by the artificial pool of the Domus Aurea di Nerone, to build it. Its construction began in 70 AD and was completed in 80 AD under the reign of Titus, son of Vespasian.

The Colosseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, is one of the most famous monuments of ancient Rome. It was built between 72 and 80 AD under the emperors Vespasian and Titus. It is located in the centre of Rome and could accommodate approximately 50,000 to 80,000 spectators.

The Colosseum was used for gladiatorial fights, hunting games and other public spectacles. It is a technical feat, with underground passages, elevators and an ingenious system for quickly filling and leaving the stadium.

Today it is a major tourist attraction and a symbol of Roman architecture and culture.
