The ‘Short Stirling monument’ in Markelo (municipality of Hof van Twente) was erected in memory of the crew of an allied Short Stirling bomber that crashed on 23 June 1943.

The names of the seven victims are:

Kenneth Alfred Burbidge, Gibson Cameron, George Lockey, Donald Ernest Martin, Andrew James McEwin, Kenneth Fazackerley Shaw and Walter Frederick Wilcockson.

The Short Stirling bomber of the 75th Squadron of the Royal New Zealand Air Force was on its way to the German Ruhr area during the night of 22 to 23 June 1943, when it was hit by German anti-aircraft guns and subsequently shot down by a German night fighter. The aircraft crashed in the Kattenburg in Markelo. All seven crew members were killed.
