The capital was first called Noord-Wester Haven by the Dutch and later Port Nord-Ouest and Port Louis by the French. In 1804 it was named Port Napoléon in honour of the Emperor. In 1810, with the arrival of the British, it regained its final name of Port Louis. If the name "Port" is obvious, what about the name "Louis"? Some historians believe it is a tribute to the ruler Louis XV, while others believe it is named after the city of Port Louis in Brittany...
