The caveja is considered the symbol of Romagna par excellence; the term comes from peasant tradition, and indicates a wrought iron rod ending at the top in a plate ("pagella") decorated with rings and allegorical images. The most common symbols, inserted between decorative elements, are those of the rooster, the crescent moon, the Sun, the eagle and some Christian symbols, including the Cross and the Dove.
The corresponding term in Italian is "cavicchia" or "cavicchiolo", in reference to its typical shape and its use.
