The current ruin was built between 1220 and 1240 as a church fortification. As part of the defensive ring of the Ostmark, the fortified church was dedicated to Saint Martin.
After several changes of ownership, the former fortification was privately renovated in 1988. In the 1990s, local archaeologists discovered the so-called "astronomical window" in the ruins: this always focuses the sunlight at a specific point on the opposite inner wall at the winter solstice.
