Best Hikes to The Portals

Tips

  • The Portals mark the dramatic and endpoint of the Ptarmigan Ridge Trail, offering some of the most stunning and remote views in the Mount Baker Wilderness. Located approximately 5 miles from the Artist Point Trailhead, The Portals are a pair of rocky spires that frame the backdrop of Mount Baker's Coleman Glacier and the surrounding alpine landscape. At the foot of The Portals is a flat, rocky plateau which also serves as a remote climbers camp, but is a nice place for day hikers to drop their packs, enjoy a snack, and take in the amazing views before heading back down the Ptarmigan Ridge Trail.
