    Hiking

The statue honors John By (1779-1836), the builder of the Rideau Canal.
For the background of the Rideau Canal, see here: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rideau_Canal

Along with the construction of the canal, a settlement for the workers was built (Bytown), which later developed into Ottawa.
The statue was created in 1971 by Joseph-Émile Brunet.

The Byward Market in Ottawa was also named after John By, as were parks, streets and a lake.
