This 7-foot (2 m) monolith was built in the early 17th century and is thought to mark the boundary between Wadsworth, Hebden Royd and Sowerby. It is a prominent landmark and an objective for many fine moorland rambles above Calderdale.
Like many such landmarks, it has attracted its fair share of local legend. One such tale tells of a milk-maid named Joan who met her end in a blizzard, freezing to death while carrying milk between Luddenden and Peckett Well. Another claims that the monolith spins around thrice on new years eve, when the midnight bells toll in nearby St Michael's Church.
The stone features in a poem by Ted Hughes, one of Britain's greatest poets, who was born in Mytholmroyd.
