At the site of today's church stood at the end of the 15th century, a votive chapel, built by the Kornmüller as a thank you for a recovered cattle herd.
Then there stood between 1658 and 1660 a wooden chapel with attached hermitage, in the successively lived until 1803 ten by name known hermits, three of which have their final resting place in the church.
The current pilgrimage church was built by Philipp Mühlmayr from Bärnau. It was named after its completion around 1732 by the then chaplain.
