The village of Espartinas was located at an important crossroads of livestock routes, close to the fertile plain of the Tagus River, and the salt produced in the mines was one of the main industrial resources for the inhabitants of the villages of Ciempozuelos for centuries. The archaeological site was declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 2006.
