The special thing about the place name is the fact that it was transferred to the ruling house of Lippe-Biesterfeld, which ruled the Principality of Lippe until 1918. The grandfather of the current Dutch King Willem-Alexander also comes from this family: Prince Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld (husband of Queen Juliana).
The local and family history is beautifully documented in the center of Biesterfeld.
