On 23 May 1895, four young people - L. van Dyk, F. van Dyk, C. Krynauw and Lettie de Jager - were caught in a sudden flood in the Witte River and lost their lives. A monument along the Happy Valley Trail in the Bainskloof Pass commemorates this tragedy.
