This fountain was commissioned by Cardinal D. Henrique, Archbishop of Évora in 1556. The architect was Diogo de Torralva, who at the time was also the master builder responsible for the construction of the Água de Prata Aqueduct.

It has been classified as a National Monument since 1922.
