Location: Harz Mountains, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany
Caution!
The lookout point was relocated and is now 100 m lower.
Great view of the Granetalsperre and Wolfshagen !!
The altar cliffs (516 m above sea level) are located between Hahnenklee and Wolfshagen, above the Granestausees.
From the wooded cliff you can enjoy a unique view over the Granetalsperre.
Why the altar cliff got its name is not conclusively proven. It is believed that the Hildesheim bishop Altfrid (approx. 800 to 874), whose family owned property in the Vorharz, held services on the altar cliff in order to convert the heathen population of the Harz to the Christian faith.

New vantage point since 2019, great view of Granetalsperre, Wolfshagen and far into the Harz foreland.
Do not drive down the forest path, 30 m behind the lookout point is the entrance to the Altar Cliff Trail on the left: It's worth it!
