Populonia Alta is still inhabited part of Populonia and is located on the today Poggio Castello called hill, which was later settled by the Etruscans. The medieval walls that surround the village are still very well preserved. At that time, they were mainly used to protect against pirates. The castle itself was built at the beginning of the 15th century by Jacopo II Appiani and restored in the 18th century. A tour through the streets leads to the tower of the fortress, from whose top one has a panoramic view of the sea to Elba and the Tuscan mainland. The church of Santa Maria della Croce, near the entrance of the fortress, has frescoes dating back to 1516 and originates from the Sodoma area. The two canvas paintings from here, Trasporto di San Cerbone (18th century) and Vergine con Bambino (14th century), are now housed in the Museo diocesano d 'arte sacra Andrea Guardi in the Duomo of Piombino Not far from Via di Sotto is the Museo Archeologico Gasparri.
