Hengsteysee - Niedernhof - Entrepreneurial Villa Funckenburg near Herdecke

The Niedernhof, more rarely also called Villa Funcke or Funckenburg, is an entrepreneurial villa in Herdecke. It is located on the northern shore of the Hengsteysee. Today the "Cafee Seeschlößchen" is at home here.

The Niedernhof was built in 1872 as a country residence by Bernhard Wilhelm Funcke II. In 1895, the Hagen entrepreneur Bernhard Wilhelm Funcke III, owner of the screw factory Funcke & Hueck, acquired the site of the ceded manor Haus Niedernhofen about 700 m further down the river. The villa was built of natural stone in the neo-Gothic style and was popularly known as Funckenburg.

In order to be able to reach his factory in Hagen at any time without major detours, Funcke built a private iron pedestrian suspension bridge over the Ruhr, which spanned the river between two towers in medieval designs. The southern bridge tower, today located on an island in the lake, has been preserved.

In 1919, the heirs of Wilhelm Funcke sold the site on the Ruhr to the Ruhrverband in Essen, which began building the reservoir in 1926.

Nice walls on the Ruhrtalradweg. You used to be able to stop here.

Villa Niedernhofen, also known as Funkenburg, is a historic entrepreneur's villa on Lake Hengstey. It was built around 1900 by Wilhelm Funke, a screw manufacturer from Hagen. The villa got its popular name "Funkenburg" from the family name of its builder. It stands on the site of the former manor house Haus Niedernhofen, which had a long history as a noble residence dating back to the Middle Ages. The Ovelacker family owned the estate for several centuries until it was abandoned after a fire in 1857 and the family died out.

When Lake Hengstey was dammed in 1929 to regulate the Ruhr, the old Niedernhofen manor house partially sank into the water. Today, the remains can be found on the bottom of the lake. The Mouse Tower, which stands on an island in the lake, was once part of a pedestrian bridge that connected the villa to the opposite bank. The villa itself is now a characteristic feature on the northern shore of Lake Hengstey and is a reminder of the region's history, which is strongly influenced by industrialization and the use of water.

Particularly beautiful view. A bench on the bank invites you to take a break.

Please don't just "walk the walk," but take a look around. It's really worth it. There's so much to discover at the lake.
