The Koepchenwerk is a pumped storage power plant and is now an industrial monument. In 1930 the old plant was commissioned as the second German pumped storage power plant and supplied electricity until 1994. The new plant has been in operation since 1989.
The principle is simple: when there is a high demand for electricity in Germany, water flows at high pressure from the reservoir above through the power plant turbines and drives them. When electricity demand is low (especially at night), water is pumped up from the Hengsteysee in order to refill the reservoir.
The Koepchenwerk is part of the Industrial Culture Route.
