The earliest fortification of a castle around Bad Berneck can be found in the early medieval section fortification on the Hohe Warte. There are no contemporary documents or views. The castle gate was probably located on the eastern steep slope. The fortification on the Hohe Warte probably served to secure the trade route and border. Of course, this castle would also have served as a refuge in the event of war or could even have housed a small administrative center, but these were - if at all - only secondary aspects. It is completely unknown when the castle was abandoned. This may have happened when the imperial road was relocated to the Schlossberg in the 12th century. Only several ramparts and the main rampart have survived to this day.
