A succession of 11 locks over just over 2 kilometres, or one every 200 meters on average, allows boats to overcome 27 meters of drop. It is a real aquatic lift on the banks of the Ille et Rance canal. The locks are still operated manually and each of them has its own Napoleonic-style lock house.
