Drilling rig of the former saltworks in Dörnfeld.
The discovery of a rock salt deposit in the “Salzilm” mountain field shortly before the 19th century, with the first drilling and sinking in 1894, marked the beginning of the traditional “Saline Oberilm” site.
In 1902, the "Schwarzburger Saline Union" was founded in Stadtilm. For almost 100 years the brine flowed from Dörnfeld through a 7 km long pipe to Oberilm.
In 6 boiling pans, the brine was boiled using lignite and a pan salt was produced.
Even before World War II, over 12,000 t / a of salt were being produced.
After the war and the transformation into a state-owned company, the Oberilm salt works had been the last pan salt works in the former GDR since the 1960s. Source: saline-stadtilm.de/unternehmen
The saline towers are still preserved and are under monument protection.
