The name "Riudaura" (river of gold) has inspired local stories, although the "wealth" probably refers to the fertility it offered to the fields in the area, rather than to actual gold finds.
Although it usually has a low flow, in times of heavy rain or Mediterranean storms, the Riudaura can suddenly rise, which has caused minor flooding in the past, especially in areas close to its mouth.
