Thunderbird Effigy Mound is located along the hiking trail in the Heritage Addition to the Effigy Mounds National Monument. Over the years, natural and human factors have contributed to the mound's degradation, making it challenging to distinguish its thunderbird shape from the surrounding landscape.

The Heritage Addition to the Effigy Mounds National Monument is south of the Yellow River. It was acquired in 1999 and added to the monument, increasing its size to 2,526 acres. The Heritage Addition contains more than 200 known prehistoric mounds, including 31 bear and bird effigies—the largest known concentration of surviving mounds in the United States.
