The Mümmelkensee is located about 2.3 kilometers northwest of Bansin in the municipality of Heringsdorf in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district. The lake, surrounded by forest, is located about 1 kilometer northeast of the Schmollensee. The name comes from the Mummel, the yellow water lily (Low German: Mümmelken). This body of water is the pool of a kettle bog. The open water surface covers about 3300 square meters, the size of the lake is usually given as about 1 hectare. The lake was formed at the end of the Weichselian Ice Age from a block of dead ice within a moraine. A raised bog was formed in the drainage-free depression, fed only by precipitation. A layer of peat was formed, which reached 4 meters thick at the edge and 15 meters inside the depression. There is quaking grass on the banks. The Mümmelkensee is one of the few uncultivated moors in Pomerania; it has never been drained and has not been used for peat extraction.
